The HI-729 pocket checker is a simple and accurate way to measure low ranges of fluoride.
Fluoride is one of the few chemicals that has been shown to cause significant effects in humans through drinking water. Fluoride has beneficial effects on the teeth at low concentrations in drinking water, but excessive exposure to fluoride in drinking water or in combination with exposure to fluoride from other sources can lead to a number of adverse effects.
Water fluoridation is the controlled addition of fluoride to a public water supply to reduce tooth decay. Fluorinated water works on the tooth surface: in the mouth it provides a low level of fluoride in the saliva, reducing the rate at which tooth enamel is de-mineralized and re-mineralized in the early stages of the tooth cavity.
A committee of experts from the World Health Organisation proposed a fluoride content of 0.5 to 1.0 mg/l, depending on the climate, in 1994. Bottled water usually has unknown levels of fluoride and some household water filters remove some or all of the fluoride.
